Well, it looks like Valentine’s Day went and snuck right up on us this year…that fateful day, both loved and hated by so many across the country. Personally, I don’t hate Valentine’s Day, but I do absolutely refuse to dine out that day. The meal is typically disappointing, they always cram way too many couples in awkwardly close to one another, and…if I’m being honest…it reminds me of a terrible Valentine’s date (not Kevin!) many many years ago that involved bad sushi and obnoxious sake bombs (like the kind where you prop the sake up on chopsticks and slam the table so that it drops into your beer…um yeah, his idea….how romantic, right?)
In recent years, Kevin and I have opted to stay in for Valentine’s Day, like last year when we invited friends over to celebrate with us. Kevin never objects to this, and it usually gives me leverage to vie for a better dinner out on another night…win win!
While I may not be a fan of dining out on V Day, what I am a fan of are sweet little gestures of love…a hand-written card, a bouquet of flowers, a sweet toast, or (duh!) a homemade treat, like these sugary little donuts….
Heart-Shaped Donut Holes
Ingredients:
(for this recipe, you will need a heart-shaped cookie cutter about 2 inches wide)
canola or vegetable oil, for frying
2 tablespoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 12oz. can Pilsbury Grands Jr. biscuits
Instructions
Add about 1.5 inches of oil to a medium-sized, heavy bottom pan. Heat the oil to 350 degrees.
While the oil is heating, mix together the sugar and cinnamon, and set aside.
Open the biscuits and lay each one flat on a cookie sheet. Using the cookie cutter, cut out one heart shape from each biscuit (save the remnants to bake and enjoy later).
Add half of the dough hearts to the hot oil, and fry until golden. Remove the fried hearts to a paper towel-lined plate, and let sit for just a few seconds. While still hot, toss the hearts with half the sugar mixture in a bowl. Repeat with the other half of the dough.
Makes 10 donuts
PS…thanks to my FAB hand model, Stella…you may have recognized her from a prior appearance! ;)
